Engine & System Diagnostics

Modern vehicles are equipped with onboard diagnostic systems (OBD) that monitor engine performance, emissions, transmission behaviour, and other systems in real time. When something triggers a warning light or the vehicle develops an unusual symptom, this data is recorded as fault codes.

At Ribaudos, we use professional diagnostic equipment to read and interpret these codes properly — not just retrieve a code and replace the part it mentions. Fault codes indicate where a problem is being detected, but a good technician confirms what's actually causing it before recommending any repair.

When to consider a diagnostic check

  • Check engine or other warning light is on
  • Unusual fuel consumption or reduced performance
  • Rough idle, misfires, or hesitation when accelerating
  • Pre-purchase inspection of a used vehicle
  • Recurring issues that haven't been resolved elsewhere

Safety

Brake System Service

The braking system is one of the most safety-critical parts of any vehicle, and it's also one that degrades gradually — which means symptoms can develop slowly without the driver noticing the change in performance.

We inspect the complete brake system: pads, discs, caliper condition and slide pins, brake lines, and fluid condition. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point and can cause brake fade under hard use. We only recommend what genuinely needs replacing based on the inspection — not by default.

Common brake warning signs

  • High-pitched squealing when braking (wear indicator)
  • Grinding or metallic scraping noise — can indicate metal-on-metal contact
  • Vehicle pulling to one side when braking
  • Brake pedal feels soft, spongy, or travels further than usual
  • Vibration through the pedal or steering wheel when braking
  • Increased stopping distances

Handling

Suspension & Steering

Suspension wear is a gradual process, and drivers often adapt to the changes without recognising them as a problem. A vehicle with worn suspension components is harder to control in emergency situations, brakes less effectively, and tends to wear tyres unevenly.

We check shock absorbers and struts, control arm bushings, ball joints, anti-roll bar links, steering components, and wheel alignment. Some of these components are straightforward to check visually; others require the weight off the wheels and specific load testing. We explain what we find in plain language.

Signs of suspension wear

  • Uncomfortable ride — excessive bouncing or pitching
  • Vehicle nose-dives when braking or leans excessively in corners
  • Steering wheel vibration at certain speeds
  • Uneven or rapid tyre wear
  • Clunking or knocking noises over bumps
  • Car drifts or pulls to one side without braking

Electrical System Repair

Electrical faults are among the most challenging to diagnose correctly, largely because symptoms can be vague, intermittent, or appear unrelated to the actual cause. A battery fault can cause a range of strange behaviours elsewhere in the car; a single sensor can trigger multiple warning lights.

We approach electrical diagnostics methodically — starting with the power and charging system, working through circuits and sensors, and using manufacturer-level scan tools where necessary. We don't guess at electrical faults: we trace them.

Typical electrical issues we address

  • Battery not holding charge — slow or failed starts
  • Alternator faults — battery warning light while driving
  • Dashboard warning lights with unclear causes
  • Lighting faults — headlights, indicators, interior
  • Sensor failures (O2 sensors, ABS sensors, MAF sensors, etc.)
  • Intermittent electrical gremlins — windows, central locking, etc.

Routine vehicle maintenance service

Oil Changes & Routine Servicing

Regular servicing is the most effective thing you can do to protect the long-term reliability of your vehicle. It's not glamorous work, but it matters — and cutting corners on a service schedule has a cumulative effect on engine wear, performance, and eventual repair costs.

We follow manufacturer service intervals and use the correct oil specifications for your engine type. Every service includes a multi-point visual inspection so we can identify anything developing before it becomes a more significant issue. We report everything we find — what needs attention now, and what's worth monitoring.

Routine service items

  • Engine oil and filter change
  • Air filter inspection and replacement
  • Cabin (pollen) filter replacement
  • Spark plug inspection and replacement
  • Coolant level and condition check
  • Brake fluid, power steering fluid, and other fluid levels
  • Tyre pressure check and visual inspection
  • Lights, wipers, and general vehicle walk-around

Pre-purchase vehicle inspection
Pre-Purchase

Pre-Purchase Vehicle Inspection

Buying a used vehicle without an independent inspection is a significant financial risk. Private sellers and dealers don't always disclose everything, and problems that are obvious to a trained technician can be invisible to a buyer at the roadside.

Our pre-purchase inspection examines the engine and transmission, braking and suspension systems, tyre condition, bodywork for signs of previous accident repairs or resprays, fluid levels and condition, and a diagnostic scan for stored fault codes. We provide a written summary of our findings.

This service is designed to give you clear, independent information so you can make your own decision about whether to proceed with the purchase — and at what price.

What the inspection covers

  • Engine diagnostic scan for stored fault codes
  • Engine bay visual check — leaks, wear, previous repairs
  • Brake system condition — pads, discs, fluid
  • Suspension and steering check
  • Tyre condition and legal compliance
  • Bodywork assessment — signs of accident repair or corrosion
  • Fluid levels and visible condition
  • Lights, electrical functions, and cabin check
